Daily Routine of an IMSS Student

· By Tamara Muñoz

Our students’ routine begins from the moment they walk through the front door. During morning class time, children can choose whatever they want for breakfast from the options offered by the center. It’s about setting up your table, your plate, your cutlery, and then cleaning up. They go to their corresponding classroom, where they take off their outdoor shoes and put on their sneakers, leaving their street shoes organized at the entrance to the classroom.

Once the work day begins from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. within the Montessori environment, our students can choose which area and what materials they prefer to work with, as long as they are already familiar with the materials and the guide has introduced them. They can choose between sensory areas, practical life, mathematics, zoology, biology, geography or language. At the same time, our Maker space will be open so that, in shifts and in small groups, our students can carry out project-based work.

Before heading out to the playground for free play, the students in charge of the day prepare a fruit snack for the whole group. This involves preparing the fruit, cutting it, plating it, and serving it, including cleaning up afterward. During free play, they have access to various materials to practice motor or gross motor skills. After this break, they will have different activities each day of the week such as French, environmental education, emotional education or chess.

Then it’s time to eat, and the space is prepared for it, with tablecloths, cutlery and the corresponding plates. Don’t forget to leave the space clean and tidy before returning home.

And on Fridays… our learning walks! We travel by bus, we have direct contact with nature and we access areas for psychomotor activities.
