A day in the Children’s Community: A Montessori Experience

· By Tamara Muñoz

A warm welcome to our Montessori school in Spain

Moving to Spain with young children can be an exciting but challenging experience, especially when it comes to choosing the right educational environment. To themontessori international schoolIn Spain, we provide a bilingual, enriching space where young children can develop independence, confidence and a lifelong love of learning. Our children’s community (ages 0-3) offers a carefully prepared environment designed to support early childhood development through hands-on learning, self-discovery, and meaningful social interactions.

What is a typical day like in our Children’s Community?
Let’s take a closer look!

Morning routine: independence and order

When we arrive in the morning, the first thing we do after greeting our teachers is change our shoes for more comfortable ones that allow us to move freely around the classroom. We take our belongings out of our backpacks and put everything in its place. This routine helps us recognize our names, develop a sense of order, practice courtesy, and become more independent.

Montessori Work Time: Hands-On Learning

After settling in, we began our work period. The best thing is that we can choose the materials that interest us the most. Our teacher, a trained Montessori guide, carefully prepares the classroom environment with work trays appropriate to our level of development.

These activities allow us to explore various skills, such as:

Art and Creativity– Engage in painting, drawing and crafts.

Self-care and practical life skills– Learn to dress, wash our hands and pour water.

Environmental Care– Water plants, clean and organize materials.

language development– Explore books, vocabulary cards and practice communication.

Fine motor skills and coordination.– Transfer objects, string beads and solve puzzles.

Food preparation– Juice oranges, cut fruit and set the table.

We also have a cozy reading area with books placed on shelves at our height, allowing us to access them whenever we want.

Circle Time: Bilingual Learning and Social Interaction

At some point during the day, when our focus begins to shift, our teachers gather us in a circle. Together, we sing songs, listen to stories, and explore flashcards related to our current learning topic. These activities are always carried out in both English and Spanish, helping us develop bilingual skills from an early age.

Since our brains absorb everything like sponges, our teachers ensure that we are surrounded by rich, engaging, and age-appropriate stimuli that enhance our learning experience.

Outdoor play: movement and exploration

• Then, we go to the bathroom to freshen up before going out to play. On the playground, we:

• Take care of the garden, learning responsibility and patience.

• Engage in physical activities that help develop strength and coordination.

• Enjoy the fresh air while interacting with our colleagues.

Lunch time: learning independence and social skills

After an active morning, we return to the classroom, wash our hands, and prepare for lunch. We participate in setting the table, and once everyone is seated, we say “bon appetite” before eating.

Lunchtime teaches us important skills:

• Practice independent feeding at our own pace.

• Use appropriate table manners and polite expressions.

• Clean up after ourselves, contributing to an orderly environment.

Rest Time: Relaxation and Recharge

After a busy morning learning and playing, we kicked off our shoes and settled in for a nap. Rest is an essential part of our day, allowing us to recharge for the afternoon.

Afternoon activities: special visits and enrichment

• Once we wake up, it’s time to go home, but sometimes we have special visitors! On different days, we could:

• Listen to live music from teachers who introduce us to different instruments and musical notes.

• Practice yoga with a teacher who guides us through calming movements and relaxation techniques.

• Enjoy interactive storytelling, where we interact with imaginative songs and stories.
