The importance of early childhood education

· By Tamara Muñoz

A closer look at our Nest and Children’s Community at IMS Sotogrande

In the foundational years of a child’s life, every experience shapes his or her future. At IMS Sotogrande, we value these first years, offering personalized programs in our Nest (5-18 months) and Children’s Community (18 months to 3 years). Our approach goes beyond traditional education, focusing on holistic growth through practical living activities, fostering language and motor skills, and cultivating independence within a Montessori environment.

Early Childhood Education:

The importance of Early Childhood Education cannot be overestimated. In our Nido program, we create a welcoming environment for our youngest learners, focused on sensory and motor development. As they grow and move into the Children’s Community, the focus expands to include language development and independence, essential for their evolving personalities and abilities. This stage is critical, as children begin to absorb and interpret the world around them, laying the foundation for their future.

Independence and movement:

In our Children’s Community, independence is a key objective. Through engaging activities such as dressing, food preparation and tidying up, children not only develop practical skills, but also gain confidence and a sense of achievement. These activities, integral to the Montessori method, improve fine motor skills and coordination, forming a foundation for academic skills such as writing and mathematics.

The power of practical life activities:

Practical Life activities are at the heart of our curriculum. These simple but impactful tasks do more than teach; They build life skills. Children learn to concentrate, establish order, and feel pride in completing tasks. These experiences cultivate independence, respect for their surroundings, and understanding of their role in the community, all while improving their physical prowess.
