The term “baby teething timeline” describes the gradual development and eruption of primary teeth. The first teeth usually appear around 6 months, although they may come in between 4 and 12 months. Most children have all 20 primary teeth by around age 3, with normal variation between babies.

In brief

  • The first teeth usually come in between 4 and 12 months.
  • Common discomfort includes sensitive gums, drooling and a need to bite.
  • A safe, cool teether used under supervision may ease pressure.
  • High fever, persistent diarrhoea or marked lethargy require medical evaluation.

What the baby teething timeline looks like at each stage

The search term “baby teething timeline” usually refers to two different processes: the development of teeth inside the gums and their later eruption. The first begins before birth. The second becomes visible when the first tooth appears and continues through the early years.

The lower central incisors usually come first. They are followed by the upper incisors, lateral incisors, first molars, canines and second molars. This order is a guide, not a rigid schedule. A baby may vary slightly from the sequence without it indicating a problem.

What changes between 6 and 12 months

Between 6 and 12 months, many babies move from exploring objects with their mouths to having swollen gums and a stronger need to bite. They may also sleep worse for a few days. Teething does not explain every change in behaviour, so it is important to look at the whole picture rather than only the mouth.

Baby tooth eruption without unnecessary worry

Baby tooth eruption can cause pressure, sensitivity, drooling and a desire to bite. A small, raised area may also appear on the gum. These signs usually improve with simple, consistent support, without turning every discomfort into an emergency.

Normal signs and signs that need attention

During baby tooth eruption, offer an object designed for biting and wipe away excess saliva to protect the skin on the neck. A high temperature, repeated vomiting, persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulties or a very lethargic baby should not automatically be attributed to teething.

The American Academy of Pediatrics provides families with child health guidance on its official paediatrics website. If a symptom is severe or lasts longer than expected, consult your paediatrician.

A common mistake when soothing sore gums

A common mistake is freezing a teether or using anaesthetic products without professional advice. Extreme cold can irritate the gum, and some gels are not suitable for babies. Instead, choose a large, one-piece teether, cool it in the fridge and check it before every use.

Montessori routines for baby teething

A Montessori routine for baby teething combines observation, limited freedom and a prepared environment. The adult offers two safe choices, explains what they are going to do and avoids holding the child down by force. In this way, mouth care gradually becomes a predictable experience.

The Association Montessori Internationale places observing the child and respecting their individual pace at the centre of support. At home, this means noticing when your baby wants to bite, which textures they tolerate and what time of day feels calmest.

Example: a difficult afternoon at 8 months

At 8 months, imagine that your baby rubs their gum at 18:30 and refuses to play. You can offer a one-piece silicone teether, cooled in the fridge rather than frozen, for around 10 minutes while staying with them. Afterwards, wipe away the drool, dim the lights and maintain the usual bedtime routine.

Example: independence at 18 months

At 18 months, teething may still cause discomfort, even if your child already has several teeth. Place a child-sized toothbrush beside the sink and let your child pick it up. Then complete the brushing with a rice-grain-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste, twice a day and for long enough to clean every surface.

When to seek advice about baby tooth eruption

Baby tooth eruption requires medical advice if there is a high fever, severe pain, swelling that spreads, unexplained bleeding, ongoing refusal of fluids or a marked change in general wellbeing. It is also worth asking for guidance if no teeth have appeared by around 12 months or if the family has concerns about the enamel.

Frequently asked questions

What does a baby teething timeline mean?

A baby teething timeline covers the development and eruption of primary teeth. The first teeth usually appear around 6 months, although they may come earlier or later. Children have 20 primary teeth, but the timing and order vary between babies. One isolated variation does not necessarily indicate a problem.

Does teething cause a fever?

Teething can cause sensitive gums, drooling and a desire to bite, but it should not by itself explain a high fever, persistent diarrhoea or marked lethargy. If these signs appear, especially alongside breathing difficulties, refusal of fluids or extreme sleepiness, consult a healthcare professional.

How can I soothe my baby’s sore gums?

Offer a safe, large, one-piece teether that is cool from the fridge but not frozen. You can also gently massage the gum with a clean finger. Always supervise use, remove the object if it develops cracks and avoid anaesthetic products or small pieces without professional advice.

When should my baby see a dentist?

It is advisable to arrange a dental visit when the first tooth appears and, at the latest, around the first birthday. The check-up provides guidance on hygiene, fluoride, diet and preventing tooth decay. You should also book an earlier appointment if you notice stains, enamel changes, pain, swelling or any other change that concerns you.
