Baby sensory activities are short play experiences that let babies safely explore textures, sounds, movement, colours and temperatures. For a baby, a basket with three large objects or a few minutes of tummy time can already provide a rich experience, provided an adult is present and the baby is never pressured to participate.

In summary

  • From 0 to 6 months, prioritise the voice, physical contact, movement and visual contrasts.
  • Between 6 and 12 months, offer large, safe objects that are easy to grasp.
  • From 1 to 2 years, introduce water, simple pouring activities and movement-based play.
  • Effective sensory play is brief and respects the child’s signs of tiredness.

What are 10 sensory activities for babies and toddlers?

The best activities use everyday materials, have a simple purpose and allow the child to act independently. These ten ideas can be adapted from the early months through age 2 by changing the size of the objects, the child’s position and the length of the play session.

  1. Texture basket: add a muslin cloth, a large sponge and a fabric ball.
  2. Sound bottle: use a tightly sealed bottle containing rice and check the closure before offering it.
  3. Fabric play: let the baby pull large scarves from an open box.
  4. Safe mirror: use a shatterproof mirror placed at floor level for a few minutes.
  5. Water and sponges: prepare a shallow container with a small amount of water for squeezing and releasing a large sponge.
  6. Texture path: combine a blanket, a towel and a mat for barefoot walking.
  7. Sound basket: offer a wooden spoon, a soft drum and a large metal box.
  8. Melting ice: for children who are already walking, watch how an ice cube changes inside a container.
  9. Fresh herbs: let the child smell fresh mint or rosemary, without essential oils or plants that the child could put in their mouth.
  10. Pouring between cups: from 18 months, let the child transfer water between two large cups while an adult stays beside them.

Avoid small parts, bags, balloons, beads and hard foods. The American Academy of Pediatrics offers general guidance on child safety, supervision and choking prevention.

What are good baby sensory activities from 0 to 1 year?

From 0 to 1 year, choose activities that focus on one sense at a time and allow the baby to respond with their body. When choosing baby sensory activities, look for signs such as looking, touching, vocalising or moving towards the material. If the baby turns their head away or becomes stiff, the activity is over.

AgeActivitySuggested durationAdult’s role
0-3 monthsVoice, face and soft fabric2-5 minutesBring the material closer slowly
3-6 monthsSafe mirror and large rattle5-8 minutesPlace the object within reach
6-9 monthsBasket with three objects8-10 minutesAllow touching without directing
9-12 monthsWater, sponge and large cups10 minutesSupervise every movement

The materials do not need to be sophisticated. A folded towel, a wooden spoon and a familiar person’s voice offer more possibilities than a tray crowded with stimuli.

What are good sensory activities for babies aged 0 to 6 months?

From 0 to 6 months, baby sensory activities should focus on touch, eye contact, hearing and free movement. The adult can talk, sing, slowly move an object from one position to another or place a soft fabric near the baby’s hands, always keeping the face uncovered.

How can you choose baby sensory activities without overstimulation?

Choose one material, reduce background noise and leave space for the baby to rest. During tummy time, place a high-contrast image or safe mirror in front of the baby for one or two minutes. Then change the baby’s position and observe their response.

A common mistake is preparing too many objects at once. Instead, remove five materials and leave just one or two. Also turn off the television and avoid toys that combine lights, sounds and movement simultaneously.

What activities can I do with children aged 0 to 2?

From 0 to 2 years, you can offer water play, texture exploration, sound activities, movement and objects to carry. With baby sensory activities, safety depends more on supervision and the size of the materials than on the price or brand of the toy.

Practical example 1: at 18 months, place two large plastic cups and a container with two centimetres of water on a towel. Set aside eight minutes. The child fills, empties and repeats while you remain seated beside them.

Practical example 2: with a 10-month-old baby, prepare a basket with three large objects: a fabric ball, a wooden spoon and a sponge. Leave it on the floor for seven minutes and name only what the child touches.

In both cases, the adult prepares the environment but does not turn the activity into a demonstration. The child sets the pace and can stop whenever they want.

Everyday sensory activities for babies and toddlers

The Association Montessori Internationale places the child’s independence and activity at the centre of the learning environment. At home, this means offering a limited choice, waiting and helping only when necessary. There is no need to correct every movement if the child is safe.

Sensory activities for babies and toddlers by developmental stage

Babies need short, repeatable experiences, while children aged 1 to 2 often want to carry, fill, empty and compare. Therefore, the same activity can develop with them: first they touch a sponge, then squeeze it and later use it to transfer water.

Frequently asked questions

What are 10 sensory activities for children?

The 10 activities include texture baskets, sound bottles, fabric play, safe mirrors, water and sponges, texture paths, sound-making objects, melting ice, fresh herbs and pouring between large cups. Adapt each activity to the child’s age, avoid small parts and provide constant supervision whenever the child may put objects in their mouth.

What activities are good for babies aged 0 to 1 year?

Suitable activities include using the voice, physical contact, soft fabrics, visual contrasts, shatterproof mirrors and baskets of large objects. Offer them for just a few minutes and stop if the baby looks away or shows signs of tiredness. Calmly repeating one experience is usually preferable to constantly changing the material.

What sensory activities are good for babies aged 0 to 6 months?

Skin-to-skin contact, songs, familiar voices, soft fabrics, high-contrast objects and tummy time with an adult present can all work well. Experiences should be slow, brief and simple. Never cover the baby’s face or restrict movement, and remove the material if the baby shows discomfort.

What activities can I do with children aged 0 to 2?

You can try water play with large containers, fabric exploration, baskets of safe objects, simple pouring activities, texture paths and sound-based play. At 18 months, use a small amount of water and stay beside the child while they fill and empty cups. Always adapt the activity to the child’s mobility and their tendency to put objects in their mouth.
