Celebrating birthdays Montessori style at IMS
At IMS Sotogrande, birthdays are more than a date on the calendar: they are an opportunity to pause, reflect and celebrate each individual child’s journey. In accordance with Montessori principles, we celebrate this special occasion with a careful classroom tradition known as“Walk around the sun.”
This child-centered experience highlights the passage of time in a meaningful and developmentally appropriate way, helping young children begin to understand the rhythm of the year and the concept of personal growth.
A journey through the years

To begin, in the center of the circle is placed a brilliant representation of the sun, surrounded by the months of the year. The birthday child holds a small globe, symbolizing the Earth, and walks slowly around the sun once for each year of his life. This gentle walk reflects the Earth’s annual orbit and gives children a concrete way to understand the passage of time.
As the child walks, the teacher shares short stories or memories from each year, highlighting important milestones, special moments, or simple joys from the child’s first years of life. These reflections, combined with a photograph from each year, help bring the child’s story to life for his or her classmates.
Photos and reflections
The photographs, one from each year of life, are shared with the group as part of the birthday walk. Children love to see how their peers have grown and changed over time. These images create a sense of connection and give peers the opportunity to appreciate the child’s unique journey.
It is a moment full of warmth and pride, allowing the birthday child to feel truly seen and celebrated.
More than a celebration

While joyful, the Montessori birthday walk is also deeply educational. Helps children begin to understand abstract concepts such as time, seasons and growth by making them visual and physical. The act of walking around the sun, once a year, makes the idea of aging and development relatable and real.
It also reinforces a strong sense of community. Classmates join together to sing songs, listen to shared memories, and often offer kind words of their own. The atmosphere is calm, respectful and happy, a true reflection of the Montessori environment.
A celebration of the whole child.
At IMS, this tradition represents our belief in recognizing the whole child—not only their academic growth, but also their life story, their experiences, and their place within the classroom community. It’s a peaceful and beautiful way to mark the passage of time, honor personal growth, and foster a deeper sense of belonging.
For our students, the Walk Around the Sun becomes the highlight of the year, something they look forward to and remember fondly. And for us, it is an opportunity to celebrate each child for who they are and how far they have come.
